NVA founder Kim Morin Weineck's Vermont Plein Air Workshop

My August workshop in VT was a productive time. With so many things I could post, I figured I'd start with a painting. A friend and photographer, Rebecca Skinner, took these photos of me starting my piece.

This day was oddly overcast and posed a challenge (in a good way) to capture the light effects on the landscape. Most of my VT work was small on-location studies which I can work into larger studio paintings in the future.

When I returned to my room at the Amee Farm Lodge I snapped this photo of the painting. Loved the greens. There's something about the Vermont air that makes me want to make art!

Foxboro Art Demonstrator Ann Gorbett, NVA

The January demonstrator for the Foxboro Art Association the Neponset Valley Artists' own palette knife painter Ann Gorbett

paintings before the demonstration began
Ann gave the members an overview of her artistic experience which led her to paint exclusively in palette knife and then started painting. Someone in the audience commented that her painting process seemed similar to icing a cake since she only uses a knife. Ann responded that it was similar and that she had 'painted' a cake before copying a Van Gogh!

A few comments of note from the demonstration:
-Ann uses a reddish underpainting, this way she doesn't have to 'cover all the holes'
-Mottled paint in a color mixture can make the painted area more interesting
-try to complete the painting in the fewest strokes
-'noodling' a painting can lose the freshness of saying more with less
-sometimes scraping a painting can result in amazing chance results

If you attended the demonstration, what was your takeaway? Please share in the comments!

Thanks, Ann, for a great demo.

NVA members take ribbons at Foxboro Art Association show!

My most heartfelt congratulations to the NVA for their participation in the Foxboro Art Association Fall Members' Show. The work displayed was beautiful and the level of competition gets stronger every year. This year around 110 paintings were displayed in different categories: oil/acrylic, pastel, watercolor, mixed media/photography.

The NVA did really well in the ribbon count. Take a look!

Kathy Harwood Hutchinson took First Place in Pastels with this gorgeous marsh with boat landscape.

Kim Morin Weineck took Second Place in Pastel for her piece, Summer Sky

Diane Scotti took Honorable Mention in pastel for her work, Freeman's Alley

Tony Donovan's oil painting of a Spanish mission was awarded Third Place in Oils/Acrylics.

And Ann Gorbett's beautiful oil, Summer Tans 1950,  done exclusively with a palette knife was awarded Honorable Mention.

Congratulations to the award-winning pieces and to all who participated. It was a great show.
