NVA work displayed at Walpole Library

The Walpole Public Library is going to open on Wednesday and members of the NVA were there today to hang a display of artwork.

Of course, you have to see them in person to appreciate them!

Frank Quinn, NVA, has worked tirelessly to ensure that the Walpole Public Library has a space for art display in its new building. He even wrote the grant to the Walpole Cultural Council which funded the display system!

The NVA is honored to be the first displayed at the library. We're also thrilled to have established, after such research, the best gallery display system. Future artists will use it with ease and we look forward to seeing many shows for years and years to come.

NVA paintings juried in!

The Norfolk Cultural Council is hosting a juried art show for the month of March. We were delighted last week to receive notification that the paintings shown in this post were accepted. We're thrilled and honored.

We hope to see you at the opening reception, Saturday, March 10th from 5-7 at the Norfolk Library's Community Room - a great painting show venue!

Nancy Bacevich created this little gem of a portrait in one class session and the piece flowed from her with elan. I enjoyed watching this come to be from start to finish. In person its colors sing.

Tony Donovan has created numerous paintings of abandoned trucks from his travels west, and his entry here follows that vein. I always love the growth potential of working in a series.

What a vast array of subjects and mediums!

The NVA meets weekly to paint and we end each class with critique of what we've worked on both during class and in the time since our last meeting. Lately there's been a surge of focus in our class and I would say it's showing in the resultant paintings created by our members.

And then there's my wife, Ann Gorbett, who is also involved in this web.

Wow! FOUR of my students won awards at the Foxboro Art Association Fall show! NVAers Nancy Bacevich, Frank Quinn, Tony Donovan and Haydi Hurley!! Congratulations! This is amazing news. More info to come.

I just came back from a very focused class and had to post something because I was excited to share.

For anyone local, there's an reception for the show at the Art Gallery at Patriot Place this coming Saturday, October 8th from 2-4pm. For more information, check out the Foxboro Art Association website.

I do love this photo. Taken by Ann Gorbett, it shows many of the NVA hard at work during our Nantucket trip. From this porch overlooking the channel, boats zoomed by, ferries came and went, and we made paintings and enjoyed each other's conversation.

Our first full day in Nantucket yielded a bunch of work. Before heading to Haydi's show opening, we had an impromptu showing of our paintings at the fireplace.

Haydi Hurley used new watercolor pencils for her two at the top left.

Nancy Bacevich did a preparatory line drawing for a future pastel on the top right.

My (Kim Morin Weineck) three wee pastels are on the fireplace screen.

Cindy Kerr's oil is on the bottom left, followed by Ann Gorbett's oil painted with palette knives only, Tony Donovan's oil, and Polo Barrera's acrylic big sky landscape.

Dinner in Nantucket

The NVA had quite a wonderful time in Nantucket, all due to the hospitality of charter member, Haydi Hurley.

More about our trip to follow on this blog, but for now, here is a photo of all of us before enjoying dinner at The Starlight, formerly the White Dog. We were out for dinner after having seen Haydi's watercolor contributions to the small works show featuring work of the Artists Association of Nantucket.

Plein air on Nantucket!

Back in April - when it was still cold and nothing outside was really green - I posted about the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod on my blog.

The specific post encouraged people to become members of the AFCC because it is a great organization encouraging the arts on Cape Cod but also because of an amazing sponsorship benefit it's offering: Free round-trip tickets on Cape Air from Hyannis to Nantucket for new members!!

I think every member of the Neponset Valley Artists joined within the week!

Tomorrow we're taking advantage of these tickets and heading to Nantucket for three days of painting and camaraderie. What fun! Can't wait!

Check back on this blog for follow up posts about this trip and what we've painted. Until them I'm packing and planning and baking and readying for some good times. Ahhhh.

While on Cape Cod this past week, we took a bike ride and explored a beautiful area called Monomoscoy Island. I had to stop to take these photos as possible painting inspiration for the Neponset Valley Artists even though I was eaten alive by biting flies in the 30 seconds it took to take these 6 photos. GRAND OPENING reception

The GRAND OPENING for the Art Gallery at Patriot Place is this coming Friday, June 10 from 6-8pm and the Neponset Valley Artists have been selected as the featured artists for the weekend. NVA Member :: Kathy Harwood Hutchinson

The NVA is made up of such talented members!

Kathy Harwood Hutchinson is an artist working in soft pastels. She has been known to foray into other mediums like acrylic and watercolor, but generally her work is luminous, wonderful pastel.

Kathy's subjects range from soothing landscapes to delightful figures to this exceptional vista from Denali in Alaska.

We know when Kathy is on her way into the classroom because we hear her wheely-cart coming down the hall. How else would a pastelist bring along all those wonderful sticks of color?

Kathy has been President of the Foxboro Art Association and writes a column for their monthly newsletter which is a true delight to read. She studies with Kim Morin Weineck which is worth noting because Kim was in the first Kindergarten class that Kathy taught! Her work is on display at the Art Gallery at Patriot Place where she is a permanent artist member.

NVA at the FAA and a show!

The Neponset Valley Artists are a busy group. Many are permanent artists at the Art Gallery at Patriot Place in Foxboro, MA. Others are involved in other painting classes. Some come to class on Thursday night with a bunch of new nearly-completed work for critiques and finishing touches.

Recently many of us met for the Foxboro Art Association meeting. If you are local to the area and love art and art-related activities, you should consider joining. It's quite a wonderful, active group with inspiring and talented artists among their membership.

With other FAA members, they are enjoying Marla's watercolor demonstration.

For us in the NVA, it's a way to connect with other artists and be inspired by some stellar painting demonstrations.

Marla Greenfield was the recent demonstrator. It was a great two hours watching her create luminous paintings.

Tonight the NVA is installing an art show at a local medical office. Personally I am highly interested in a doctors' office which installs new art exhibits four times annually. What a treat to spend time in the waiting room looking at original, local art. And for artists, what a captive audience!

NVA member :: Ann Gorbett

There are many talented members of the Neponset Valley Artists. At a recent painting class I took some photos of those in attendance in action to do a series of blog posts showcasing them. Ann Gorbett is the first!

Ann has a very specific procedure when she paints. She dons her painting shirt. She places her palette and paints just so. Her box of tissues is placed at a perfect angle a predetermined constant distance from her left hand. She also folds her brown paper trash bag a certain way. We love her for these wonderful peculiarities.

She and her husband, Polo Barrera, are permanent artist members of the Art Gallery at Patriot Place.

Ann Gorbett is a talented artist and her work is striking particularly because she works in palette knife solely. At a gallery9 opening reception last night she brought in this cake:

A real Ann Gogh! It was delicious and gorgeously beautiful!!!
